Retina Macbook Pro Shipping Faster!

Since the launch of the Macbook Pro with retina display, early customers have been experiencing long waits for their deliveries. According to MacRumors

"For the first time since its launch just over one month ago, Apple's Retina MacBook Pro has begun to see improvements in shipping estimates for new orders placed through the company's online store. The improvement has appeared first in Apple's Asia-Pacific markets, which have seen estimates move from 3-4 weeks to 2-3 weeks."

13-inch Retina MacBook Pro Incoming

When the 15-inch retina display MacBook Pro was revealed, we all looked on in amazement. This new super high res beast from Apple was amazing. What followed was an influx of rumours and questions about when the rest of the range (including the iMac) would get the retina love.

It seems that we could be seeing a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro as early as October 2012, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who recently revised his prediction from August to October.

In a recent article from DigiTimes, it seems that many big players are denying the rumours.

Rumors are that several notebook brand vendors have delayed or decreased their shipments with Apple also being named as having postponed mass shipments of a planned 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display; however, sources from upstream suppliers of Apple have refuted the rumors saying their supply status is stable.

Of course, Apple is as tight-lipped as ever. Personally, I think that the 13-inch Retina will definitely happen during 2012, as it is a natural progression. It is also very likely that these super high resolution displays will also appear in the MacBook Air at some stage and maybe even the iMac during 2013.

New Mobile Projectors from 3M Available Now

Widescreen resolution and triple-digit luminosity are among two new enhancements announced by diversified technology company 3M in the ongoing development of its award-winning mobile projection technology.  The new additions include a battery-powered, office on-the-go, mobile projector for smaller group presentations and an AC-powered, palm-sized mobile projector for impressive big-screen presentations.

The 3M Mobile Projector MP220 is the first product in the company’s award-winning family of mobile projectors to offer widescreen (WSVGA) resolution. A strong, 65-lumen brightness helps the projector deliver high clarity while a 120-minute battery life allows users a complete mobile projection experience, staying brighter for longer.  A robust, 1GB internal memory and expandable MicroSD card slot enables easy loading and storage of files directly on the projector.

Using the adapter cable to fit Apple devices, the Mobile Projector MP220 can easily connect with iPads or iPhones to display photos and videos and instantly share with others. It is also the first 3M Mobile Projector portfolio to utilise the intuitive Android operating system. Users can take advantage of the installed Documents to Go App to view Microsoft Office documents and other files. The versatility and portability of the projector therefore makes it the ideal companion device for the burgeoning mobile worker population, enhancing professional pitches and presentations, as well as offering instant entertainment.

The 3M Mobile Projector MP410 is the strongest AC-powered mobile projector for its size on the market today.  The palm-sized projector outputs a crystal-clear, 300-lumen, HD image of up to 100inches diagonally, yet has just a 400 cubic centimetre footprint and weighs less than 375 grammes.  Like all 3M Mobile Projectors, this model boasts an impressive 20,000 hour LED life, so no expensive maintenance or costly bulb replacement is required. The Mobile Projector MP410 arrives equipped with a VGA cable for quick and easy connection to laptops, as well as international power adapters for global portability. With a simple-to-use control menu and extensive user settings (including eco-mode and keystone correction), the projector is a portable powerhouse suitable for big-screen presentations and media viewing (straight out of its own pint-sized carry case, also included).

In addition to the impressive projection performance, the Mobile Projector MP410 can also be purchased with an optional USB Wi-Fi dongle. Once connected to the dongle, the projector can wirelessly project documents, photo slideshows or videos from any smartphone or tablet device capable of running the ‘MobiShow’ App (available on Android, Blackberry or iOS). When using a netbook or laptop, users can benefit from further ‘air-play’ functionality as the Wi-Fi dongle will project a mirror of the entire screen, as if connected to the projector by a cable.

The 3M Mobile Projector MP220 (retail price: £399) and Mobile Projector MP410 (retail price: £499) are available to buy from Amazon and Personal Projector.

Fears of longer commutes increase in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics

Fears of longer commutes increase in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics Londoners prepare for remote working

Concerns around the need to work remotely are higher than ever now that London is moving closer to the Olympics. People are planning to work from home or elsewhere owing to fears transport will come to a grinding halt.
Remote access experts LogMeIn commissioned a consumer snap poll* to discover how Londoners expect the Olympics to affect them. Surprisingly, however nearly two thirds of Londoners (64.8%) are not familiar with the start and end dates of the London 2012 Olympics.
The survey goes on to reveal that over half (58.7%) are planning to change their commute during the games as 33%, of those asked, believe that their daily commute would be extended by up to 30 minutes whilst more than a quarter (29.5%) anticipate a 45 minute journey increase.
However, it is not only employees who are taking precautions ahead of time but businesses, too. The survey showed that a mere 7.6% of workers will not have the option to carry out their jobs remotely. Fears are high that London transport will not be able to cope and consequently a whopping 85.7% of those involved said they would prefer to work from home during this time.

LogMeIn has several - completely free - services that offer support for remote working, such as:

join.me - a free, simple-to-use screen sharing and online meeting service.  A free version delivers on-the-fly collaboration in a matter of seconds – no registration or additional plug-ins required – supporting up to 250 participants. More features are available for an annual subscription.

LogMeIn Free – also available for free, as the name implies - gives users remote access to an unlimited number of work PCs and Macs from their home computers and even their iOS devices, like the iPad and iPhone. Users can run and access everything – applications, files, email, etc. -- on their work desktop or laptop from home or anywhere with a WiFi or 3G connection.

Cubby – simple free cloud data service allowing users to securely share information across PCs, Macs, iPads, iPhones,  Android devices, or with other people.  Cubby lets people turn any number of PC or Mac folders into ‘cubbies’ that can be accessed from other devices, stored in the cloud, and shared with colleagues and friends

*Research commissioned by LogMeIn was conducted in June 2012.

TweetDeck Twitter Security

Oh nooooo what a mess TweetDeck has made of my recent install on a new piece of Apple hardware. After cloning across a previous backup, I logged into TweetDeck (not Twitter) and it pulls all my Twitter & Facebook accounts across.

I respond to an enquiry tweet from someone asking about VizBox.TV (the website I set up, but am no longer with) and TweetDeck responds from the VizBoxTV twitter account.
I was so furious, the application would not even allow me to delete the tweet. Not having control of the account or the password, this was really weird.

What worries me though is a security flaw in TweetDeck. Of course I managed to manually remove the account, so the error cannot re-occur, but imagine if you got your TweetDeck account hacked. Worse than that, what if you restored someones else's Mac from a clone you had made… just one sign in and they would be able to tweet from all your previous accounts. I think an update with some security preferences would be a good idea.

A Trip Down (Apple) Memory Lane

Apple Store Bentall Happy GeniusBack in the day when Geekanoids was born, my primary focus was on all things Apple. In fact, the name I was better known by back then was 'davomrmac' due to my involvement with the Apple Discussions forum. My day-to-day work was that of a graphic designer and supporting the Mac & PC systems around me. I was the 'gadget man' that people turned to for advice.

My very first written review was the Tempo iPod Sports Wrap from Griffin in August 2006, follow by my first YouTube video, the Disko Case which can be seen below.

From quite an early stage I need to say a big thank you to Apple, they saw what I was trying to achieve and supported me with review products and even early access to some of their store openings. Both the Geekanoids 2nd Gen iPod Nano and 3rd Gen iPod Nano (see video below, no laughing please) were loaned to me by Apple. I remember jumping for joy when that first Nano was delivered. Getting recognition for the big 'A' was awesome. Of course it was a shame that the Nanos had to be returned after the loan period, but this is how the business works. It was the start of a great relationship that was followed by Apple TV's, laptops, software & numerous other devices. I felt very honoured and still do to this day.

Apple Store Bentall 1st CustomerOver the years of covering Apple product launches, some of my most memorable news moments are the Store Openings. These are really cool events, not product focussed at all, simply focussing on like-minded people celebrating a new beginning for a new store & staff. I have met many awesome people at the openings too, including some that I keep in touch with to this day.
The photo to the left is from the Apple Store Bental Centre, which opened back on Saturday 17th February 2007. I was given the privilege of being allowed in the store before it opened to the public, to take up a prime position to take photos. It was so exciting seeing the first customer walking down the aisle. You can read all about it here.

Since attending & covering many of these events, I have thoroughly enjoyed all the new launches, including of course the iPhone & iPad excitement. To this day… I still get excited when something new is announced. There is nothing quite like opening a new Apple product & producing a video to share with everyone. I owe a big thank you to all my viewers, without whom the Geekanoids Channel would not exist. I also owe an epically big thank you to Apple for not only making great products, but also for believeing in Geekanoids.

ADATA Raises the Bar on Solid State Drive Reliability

Launching Ultimate Performance XPG SX910

Taipei, Taiwan – June 28, 2012 – ADATA™ Technology launches the XPG SX910 solid state drive, a significant broadening of the popular and powerful XPG line of storage products. The SX910 features a 7% capacity increase over common SSDs that use a SandForce controller, delivering a powerful combination of capacity and high performance with a five-year warranty.

The ADATA XPG SX910 uses new optimized firmware to maximize utilization of the NAND Flash components, allowing for full use of the available storage capacity. This zero percent over-provisioning in the design and engineering of the SX910 is implemented with no loss to performance: maximum 4k random read/write speeds are 50,000 and 85,000 IOPS respectively, with sequential read and write speeds reaching 550 and 530MB/sec.

In addition, the SX910 undergoes an improved screening process for the Flash IC chip selection. This results in improved stability and performance, that is demonstrated by the five-year warranty that comes as standard for this SSD. With capacities of 128, 256 & 512 gigabytes, the SX910 is positioned to meet the rigorous standards of the world’s most serious gamers and professionals.

New WinZip® Mac Edition

WinZip Computing, a Corel company, today introduced WinZip® Mac Edition 2, bringing the power of the world’s number one zip utility to Mac OS X Lion and the upcoming Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Designed specifically for Mac users, WinZip Mac Edition 2 makes it simple to zip and unzip files instantly, protect confidential information and send large files easily. New features help you work more efficiently, including the ability to zip and unzip from the Finder as well as ‘In Place Editing’ that enables you to open and edit documents within a Zip file without unzipping.

Zip files are the most popular way to package, secure, store and deliver sets of files and folders, regardless of your operating system. Zipping helps to reduce upload/download times and enables files to be sent as compressed email attachments that won’t bounce. WinZip Mac Edition 2 offers the convenient ‘Zip and Email’ feature that lets you create and send Zip files directly from the WinZip window without opening your email. Large images are automatically resized and compressed for easy sending. When it’s time to back up photos and projects, ‘Zip and Burn’ makes it easy to fit more onto a CD or DVD in just one click.
When sending a Zip file to others, confidential documents can be kept secure with powerful 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption. Add passwords to files and email attachments as they’re zipped and even choose to apply a password to a specific file within a Zip file.
Designed specifically for the Mac, WinZip Mac Edition 2 integrates into the Mac OS X Quick Look tool, enabling you to browse the contents of a Zip file before it is unzipped. With support for Zip, Zipx, RAR, LHA, 7Z, JAR, and WAR formats, WinZip makes it easy to open any compressed file you receive, regardless of the platform it was created on.

“WinZip Mac Edition 2 takes advantage of the unique features of the Mac OS and builds on the success of our iOS app that’s already been downloaded by more than a million iPhone and iPad users,” said Patrick Nichols, President of WinZip. “As WinZip expands to all of today’s most popular platforms and devices, new customers are discovering the power and simplicity of using the world’s number one zip utility to compress, secure and share files.”
