Apple Special Event Update - Apple PDA

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the big day, where we expect to see announcements of a new 6th generation iPod, which is predicted to be more or less a phoneless iPhone, but with upto 120GB of storage. Other rumoured features for the so called 'iPod Touch' include updating and possibly purchasing/downloading content via wifi. Now, with features like this, things start to become interesting. If we do get wifi on an OS X based iPod, then we will more than likely get the internet too. Add to this all those third party applications, and you can go old skool and more or less have yourself a modern day Apple PDA. This is really exciting for me, as although I have a Newton, I missed it first time around. I have had a Palm and PocketPC, but never stuck with any due to my Apple lifestyle and liking devices that work properly. So, if this device is announced, then I will be one of the first to get the plastic out and splash the cash (or credit).

Something else for you all to check out is some more rumoured details and some nice screenshots over at ThinkSecret.

UK iTunes gets TV Shows - at last a reason to buy an AppleTV

Well, well, well, here in the UK we finally get an excuse to purchase an AppleTV. The good guys at Apple HQ have finally given us some TV shows. This is great news, as here in the UK we have waited a long time for this type of content. There is not a lot of British made content, maybe this will follow. Apple should really be working with the likes of the BBC (sans Mac iPlayer) to bring some true classics to the iTunes Store.

Shows include;

  • Night Stalker
  • Drake and Josh
  • That's So Raven
  • Pimp My Ride
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • Laguna Beach
  • Jongleurs Unleashed
  • South Park
  • Lost
  • Ugly Betty
  • Desperate Housewives
  • Kim Possible
  • SpongeBob SquarePants
Still a way behind our US cousins, but this is a great start.

Apple Event is confirmed September 5th; iPod?

Those guys over at Engadget have confirmed the rumored event on Wednesday September 5th is true. They have received an invitation (where is mine Apple, plus my plane ticket?) that shows a coverflow graphic. We have given you a rundown of what we expect in our earlier posts, but this seems to confirm that we will definitely be seeing something iPod related. Now I am really excited!

New iPod... thoughts!

With rumours flying left, right and centre that a new iPod will be announced on Wednesday, 5th September, Mac fans are getting pretty excited. For me, I have split feelings about this.
Part of me wants things to stay as they are. Not only does it give me an excuse to buy an iPhone when they hit the UK, but why fix something that isn't broken. The current iPod works flawlessly, has a good battery life, does what it was designed for very well (music) and has a few other abilities to add value (movies, games etc). If Apple launch a new device, similar to the iPhone (sans Phone) then that will disgruntle a lot of iPhone owners and will surely confuse their market. That is unless they make it a very different affair.
The other part of me really wants this new device. I do not need a new phone, so could give the iPhone a miss. What I do keep looking at is the Archos line-up. With their larger screens, sleek silver looks, touch screen and wi-fi for internet access. If Apple could update the iPod with these features and introduce some streaming ability and maybe syncing over wi-fi, then that would be real cool. One less chore for me to do (docking my iPod) is a must have, albeit a lazy one. So when Wednesday the 5th comes, let's hope we get some things off our wish list, here is mine;

  • 4.5-inch widescreen touch sensitive TFT
  • Different, but complimenting design to the iPhone
  • Wi-fi connectivity
  • Streaming from YouTube
  • Syncing over wi-fi connection
  • Safari internet browser
  • Bluetooth (supporting A2DP) for cool heaphones
  • 16GB or 32GB flash versions
  • 3 Megapixel Camera (maybe, maybe not)
  • OS X to retain the click wheel, albeit virtual

September 5th could be New iPod Day

ArsTechnica are reporting that there could well be an Apple Special Event next Wednesday (5th September), which supports earlier claims by AppleInsider. It seems pretty obvious that at some stage we will get a new iPod, based on the iPhone, with OSX software, but no phone capability. This'll be great in my book, as I don't really want the phone part. Let us just hope that we get larger capacities than the iPhone. It would be nice to get a 16GB or 32GB flash based player, and maybe a top-of-the-range 120GB model.

iTunes U - Learn with your iPod

A double whammy of big news, with Apple also announcing the launch of iTunes U, a dedicated area within the iTunes Store (www.itunes.co.uk) featuring free content such as course lectures, language lessons, lab demonstrations, sports highlights and campus tours provided by top US colleges and universities including Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Duke University and MIT.

“iTunes U makes it easy for anyone to access amazing educational material from many of the country’s most respected colleges and universities,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “Education is a lifelong pursuit and we’re pleased to give everyone the ability to download lectures, speeches and other academic content for free.”

“From its earliest days, Stanford has sought to serve the public by sharing the knowledge generated by our faculty and students,” said Stanford Provost John Etchemendy. “Our partnership with Apple and iTunes U provides a creative and innovative way to engage millions of people with our teaching, learning and research and share the experience of intellectual exploration and discovery that defines our university.”

Created in collaboration with colleges and universities, iTunes U makes it easier than ever to extend learning, explore interests, learn more about a school and stay connected with an alma mater. Content from iTunes can be loaded onto an iPod® with just one click and experienced on-the-go, anytime, making learning from a lecture just as simple as enjoying music.

The iTunes Store features the world’s largest catalogue, adding new education content to over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 500 movies. Apple launch iTunes Plus

Apple today launched iTunes Plus—DRM-free music tracks featuring high quality 256 kbps AAC encoding for audio quality virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings—for just 99 pence per song. iTunes Plus is launching with EMI’s digital catalogue of outstanding recordings, including singles and albums from Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Joss Stone, Pink Floyd, John Coltrane and more than a dozen of Paul McCartney’s classic albums available on iTunes for the first time.

iTunes will continue to offer its entire catalogue, currently over five million songs, in the same versions as today—128 kbps AAC encoding with DRM—at the same price of 79 pence per song, alongside the higher quality iTunes Plus versions when available. In addition, iTunes customers can now easily upgrade their library of previously purchased EMI content to iTunes Plus tracks for just 20 pence a song and £2.00 for most albums.

“Our customers are very excited about the freedom and amazing sound quality of iTunes Plus,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We expect more than half of the songs on iTunes will be offered in iTunes Plus versions by the end of this year.”

“This is a tremendous milestone for digital music,” said Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group. “Consumers are going to love listening to higher quality iTunes Plus tracks from their favourite EMI artists with no usage restrictions.”

With the release of iTunes Plus, customers can now download tracks from their favourite EMI artists without limitations on the type of music player or number of computers that purchased songs can be played on. iTunes is also offering customers a simple, one-click option to easily upgrade their library of previously purchased EMI content to the iTunes Plus versions. EMI music videos are now also available in iTunes Plus versions with no change in price. iTunes Plus songs purchased from the iTunes Store will play on all iPods, Mac® or Windows computers, widescreen TVs with Apple TV™ and soon iPhones, as well as many other digital music players.

The iTunes Store features the world’s largest catalogue with over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 500 movies. The iTunes Store has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over two million movies, making it the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store.
